Alan Shearer names Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford in team of the week

Alan Shearer has named Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford in his Premier League team of the week following the win over Manchester United.

The 28-year-old was in terrific form for the Toffees as he made a series of excellent saves to keep a clean sheet for the first time in the Premier League since February’s 3-0 win over Leeds.

Alan Shearer was tasked with selecting the team of the week for the official Premier League website, and Pickford was the man between the sticks.

“He made several important saves in a crucial win over Manchester United,” he said to justify the England international’s inclusion.

He was the sole inclusion in the side, which is maybe a little bit harsh on Ben Godfrey, Fabian Delph and Seamus Coleman who all had excellent performances too.

Everton’s performance on Saturday lunchtime was the best we’ve seen the team play in a very long time, possibly ever under Frank Lampard’s tenure.

Pickford was a big reason for that, with his experience and leadership abilities helping the defence to be settled even under pressure from the superstar squad that Manchester United possess.

Pickford made two outstanding saves from Marcus Rashford, claimed several crosses and then denied Cristiano Ronaldo late on to help the team claim all three points.

Despite the poor performances this season from the team, Pickford is one of the players who is able to hold his head up high regardless of how the campaign ends up finishing.

He’s maintained his level of professionalism throughout, made big saves and given his all for the team and the fans will remember that no matter what. It’s nice to see him get his plaudits for a win he had a big part in, despite not being the goalscorer.
