David Unsworth could have first post-Everton job already

Everton academy director and Under-23s manager David Unsworth will leave at the end of the season but he might be in line for a new job already.

According to the Liverpool Echo, the Toffees icon could be interested in the recently vacated manager’s role at Crewe Alexandra after David Artell was relieved of his duties following relegation from League One yesterday.

Unsworth stated the desire to be a first-team manager as the main reason for his Goodison Park exit but he rejected a chance at Oxford United a few years ago due to the location of the club.

That won’t be a problem with the Railwaymen who play in South Cheshire which would mean he doesn’t have to move his entire life for the job.

Finch Farm is one of the country’s most advanced training facilities but the academy players around the place have very little in the way of senior football experience.

If Unsworth does take the reins at the Mornflake Stadium, then the Toffees could strike up a very significant relationship with the Alex that would be mutually beneficial.

Everton could send their most highly-rated youngsters to Unsworth at Crewe who can be able to assess which of those will be able to make the step up to the Premier League in the future.

Not only that, but Crewe themselves have a very impressive academy and are even the only club to have played an entirely homegrown starting XI in the Football League.

With Unsworth in charge, Everton could have first pickings at any potential Premier League stars that have emerged from the Mornflake Stadium before any other top division side can get a look in.

Even though he is no longer contracted to the Toffees, it doesn’t mean his impact at Goodison Park is done for good.
