David Unsworth to leave Everton in pursuit of managerial career
David Unsworth is leaving Everton in order to pursue his ambition of becoming a first-team manager elsewhere, the club has announced.
Unsworth is currently the manager of the Everton Under-23’s team and the club’s Academy director, but he will be leaving his positions in order to fulfil a lifelong dream.
It’s not believed that there is a job already lined up for him, but he has previously managed Everton’s first-team as a caretaker on two occasions and clearly caught the bug.
“This has been one of the hardest decisions I have had to make in my career,” he said.
“Everyone knows what Everton means to me, it has been my whole life and I have loved every minute of my time here.
“However, to give me the best chance of achieving my career aspirations – and becoming a permanent first team manager – I believe now is the right time for me to move on.
“I would like to thank everyone I have worked with over the last nine years and the Owner and Chairman for the opportunities they have given me and for their unstinting support.
“Everton is an amazing club and a club I will love forever – I wish everyone connected with Everton, every success in the future.”

Legend
Unsworth first joined the club as a child in their academy, before returning for a second spell in 1998 for another six year spell.
The defender made 350 appearances for the club across his career and was part of the side that won the FA Cup in 1995. There isn’t an Everton man alive who embodies the club more than Unsie.
His exit will be a blow and a big surprise to many, but no fans will begrudge him his wish to go away and become the type of manager we all know he is capable of becoming.
Always a natural leader with high standards, he will be able to take any job and apply his own style and philosophy to them to make them a success.
It’s now a huge job for the club to replace him, not only because he was excellent at his job but because of how much he cares and is loved around the place.
It’s just another thing for the club to fix this summer after what has been a disastrous season.
