Niels Nkounkou should be bombed out of Everton as loan spell ends in humiliation

Niels Nkounkou’s loan spell away from Everton technically came to an end on Sunday as Standard Liege played their final league game of the campaign.

Nkounkou, 21, has spent the season on loan in Belgium after struggling to break through at Goodison Park.

The French left-back made a total of 25 appearances for Liege, starting 18 out of the 28 league matches he was available for after his season-long loan from Everton was confirmed.

However, Nkounkou’s time at Standard has been very forgettable with the Liege club finishing the season in 14th place – 15 points away from finishing in Belgium’s play-offs system.

While other top clubs in Belgium fight it out for European qualification and for the title, Liege have plenty of time to start planning for next season.

It remains to be seen if Nkounkou will be in their plans but one set of plans he definitely shouldn’t be a part of are Everton’s.

Nkounkou’s loan spell at Liege ended with him starting just four of their last 13 league fixtures, being left as an unused substitute twice, suffering a match ban for yellow card accumulation and a humiliating home defeat to relegation play-off club Seraing.

While the ex-Marseille left-back is only 21-years-old, he enters the last year of his contract this summer and we’ve seen nothing from him to suggest he’s a viable long-term option at Goodison.

Between now and the end of the Premier League season, Nkounkou will be left in a state of limbo as the Blues presumably figure out what to do with him.

If we go down, he could be chosen to stay on but in the more likely scenario of Everton staying in the Premier League, the Frenchman must be sold.
