Everton want to sign Mykola Matvienko this summer – report

Everton are interested in signing Ukraine international Mykola Matvienko from Shakhtar Donetsk this summer, according to 90min.

Matvienko currently plies his trade in his homeland Ukraine, but their domestic league is currently suspended due to the war with Russia.

In a new report it’s believed that Premier League club Brentford have opened talks with his club over a potential deal, but they’re not alone in their interest.

Matvienko has been ‘watched closely’ by a number of Premier League clubs over the last year including Everton, West Ham and Southampton.

The 25-year-old is capable of playing as both a left-back and centre-back and would provide great quality and depth for Frank Lampard in a summer where defensive reinforcements are essentially a guarantee.

Competition

If Everton are to stay in the Premier League this season then Lampard will absolutely need to improve his defence in the summer, and Matvienko would be able to do that.

He’s currently earned 47-caps for the Ukraine national team so far in his career despite being just 25 and that type of experience and versatility could be crucial as they look to improve.

Everton

The squad have had plenty of players play in defence this season but the majority of them have not been of the level required, hence their lowly and poor league position.

While no transfer fee has been mentioned in a potential deal and the club would be forced to compete financially with other clubs. it would be a good sign that they are looking at strengthening in the right areas.

First they need to secure safety and their Premier League status for next season though, because without that there is no chance that they can sign a player of that quality with that sort of competition.
