Everton want to sign West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone
Everton have entered the race to sign West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Sam Johnstone in the summer, according to The Mirror.
The 29-year-old will see his contract at The Hawthorns expire at the end of this season and both parties appear to have agreed to part ways at the end of June.
Tottenham Hotspur currently look like the favourites to sign the England international as a potential backup and then replacement for Hugo Lloris.
Manchester United, West Ham and Southampton are also in the race to sign Johnstone when he becomes available for nothing at the start of July.
The Toffees might be looking to get ahead of a potential issue regarding Jordan Pickford, as the Mirror report, with the current Goodison Park number one out of contract in two years and maybe wanting a move to a bigger club if one arises.
Maybe Johnstone isn’t quite at Pickford’s level but he doesn’t really need to be for what he’ll come in to be.
The best he will be is a backup for both Everton’s and England’s main man between the sticks but he’ll be one of the best backups anywhere in the division.
You don’t want to spend much on a goalkeeper if he isn’t going to be the number one so to have someone like Johnstone available for nothing bar a wage and probably a signing on fee, it’s a no brainer to go after.
Farhad Moshiri should dig deep into those seemingly never-ending pockets of his and match whatever any other side offers him to try and tempt him to Merseyside.
He won’t only be a good backup either as having him breathing down Pickford’s neck will surely only bring out the very best in the 28-year-old and that will revolutionise Frank Lampard’s team.
