Richarlison shocks pundits with ‘one of the misses of the season’ in Everton draw with Leicester

Richarlison was guilty of “one of the misses of the season” for Everton against Leicester leaving the match commentary team in disbelief.

In the first half of the 1-1 draw with Leicester at Goodison the Brazilian star had the opportunity to cancel out Harvey Barnes’ early opener, when Anthony Gordon rolled the ball across to present him with virtually an open goal.

Instead the attacking star produced a finish similar to the infamous Chris Iwelumo miss for Scotland against Norway by somehow firing back across goal and wide, leaving Leon Osman and Tony Jones shocked on commentary.

Speaking on the world feed match coverage Jones said: “What a miss by Richarlison, a glorious opportunity to draw level.”

Ex-Toffee Osman added: “I think he just expects that he’s scored already. I think he takes his eyes off the ball, probably thinking about his celebration.

“He gets it all wrong and that is a huge huge let off for Leicester.”

Summing up at the end of the half Jones clarified that it was, “One of the misses of the season.”

Costly

The star forward, linked to moves away repeatedly over the last few months, produced another bad miss with a header in the second half, and appeared to have thrown the game away.

But it was a testament to his commitment to the end that he eventually came up with an injury-time leveller.

That rightly will be the enduring memory of his night but overall it was far from his best outing.

With a daunting trip to Anfield for the Merseyside derby next up, and having come off the back of a positive performance in the Manchester United win, this game needed something to build on the last game.

The early goal dampened what was expected to be a ferocious atmosphere, and led to a frustrating game for the most part.

But Richarlison’s first goal in open play since Rafael Benitez’s final game could be crucial going forward, as could the involvement of forgotten men Dele Alli and Salomon Rondon in the build up.

A point was positive, but the time it arrived and the fight it showed will arguably be more crucial as the relegation fight goes heads into the final weeks.
