Leon Osman hails leadership of Everton ace Anthony Gordon this season

Everton legend Leon Osman says Anthony Gordon has been ‘incredible’ this season and has emerged as a shock leader within the squad.

Gordon has become a key member of the Everton side under Frank Lampard, in what is his first full-season as a first-team player at Goodison Park.

With the Toffees battling relegation, Osman told talkSPORT that the team has severely lacked leaders in this campaign but it’s the 21-year-old Gordon who has ‘carried the fight’ for the club.

“The money Everton have put in, you expect the club to making forward steps,” he said.

“Not finding the club languishing at the bottom of the Premier League, struggling for points, struggling for form, struggling for any kind of performance really, so it’s a very worrying time for the club.

“I think that’s been a criticism of this team all season, you’re looking around and you’re wondering who are the characters? Who are the leaders? You’re already falling behind in games, then you’re wondering who’s got the character to get on the ball and try and make things happen.

“And for the majority of this season that’s fell on the shoulders of young Anthony Gordon, which is incredible to say for a guy who’s just broken into the team, really young in age, really young in career [and he’s] carried the fight of such a huge club of such history of characters.”

Starlet

Everton’s season has been horrible by all aspects, but they have unearthed an absolute superstar in Gordon this season.

Under both Rafa Benitez and Lampard, the young winger has taken responsibility and constantly given his all in games. He has scored, created and even in defeat is almost always the stand-out performer.

Whether the Toffees go down this season or not, this will be remembered as the year Gordon really established himself at the club and next season he should be part of the side in a big way.

He has been the shining example for the club, even despite his age and lack of first-team experience. Senior pros should be looking to him and copying his attitude and the way he has carried himself this year.

He’s given fans hope with his performances and even if the worst case scenario happens, fans know they can count on him to help guide the team back next season too.
