Everton subject of ‘really poor’ referee decision in loss v Liverpool – Gary Lineker

Everton were subjected to another away defeat in the Premier League as they were eventually broken down by a star-studded Liverpool side.

Andy Robertson and Divock Origi scored the goals for the home side after the Toffees withstood pressure for over an hour in a feisty Merseyside derby.

The stubborn visitors did have the odd chance though and could have been awarded a penalty when Anthony Gordon went down in the box following a shove from Joel Matip.

The referee though waved play on to the anger of everyone in blue and even Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker was dumbfounded at the decision.

“Everton, although outplayed, should definitely have had a penalty. Really poor decision,” Lineker said via his personal Twitter account.

Gordon himself didn’t seem too happy with the decision as he posted a face-plant emoji in response to a video of the challenge on his Twitter page just hours after the final whistle went.

Expected

The referee was never going to upset the home Liverpool crowd and so even though it was a clear penalty, he knew he wasn’t going to give it.

Matip could have scythed him down with a two-footed scissor challenge above the knee and got away with it because that is what referees in this country can be like.

They don’t like to be booed for making what is actually the right call and so they always give the contentious decisions to the home side, every single time.

Not one official in our country has any kind of backbone to stand by their decision or go against the home crowd, particularly in a big game such as todays.

It would have been less of a surprise if he had brandished a second yellow to Gordon for diving after he was cautioned for it in the first half too (rightly so).
