Everton ‘still living in the past’ problem – Shaun Custis

Everton have been questioned if they’re living in the past by TalkSPORT’s Shaun Custis.

The Toffees currently sit in 18th position in the Premier League as they battle to stay afloat and prevent their first top-flight relegation in over 70 years.

There is growing concern amongst the Everton fanbase that they genuinely might fall into the Championship despite their size and history, which Custis points to as potentially being a reason.

Speaking on TalkSPORT last night, Custis said: “For people who are over 40, Everton are big and really significant, and a club that is in the history of the game very important.

“To people who are, say, 30 and under, they’re not. In the grand scheme of things in the world of football, they don’t make a big ripple anymore, they’re not a club being talked about around the world.

“I wonder if that’s part of their problem – that they’re still sort of living in the past. They’re trying to move into the future with a new stadium etcetera, but they’re not seen as major by younger football fans outside of Merseyside.”

Too big to go down?

It’s been proven in the past that the bigger they are, the harder they fall with the likes of Leeds United, West Ham, Newcastle and Aston Villa all dropping out of the Premier League in the last 20 years.

This rings true for Everton who are in real trouble at the bottom end of the table with six games to go as they fight to retain their over 70-year top-flight status.

Frank Lampard’s side really need to pick themselves up and start putting more points on the board at the business end of the season, but they will take solace that they have a game in hand over Burnley and Leeds who sit above them in the table.

The Toffees host Chelsea at Goodison Park on Sunday in a massive game in their fight for survival.

Fellow relegation rivals Burnley travel to Watford on Saturday whilst Leeds host league leaders Manchester City.

In other Everton news, the club have held ‘productive talks’ with the representatives of Nottingham Forest ace Brennan Johnson.
