Anthony Gordon is a future star for club and country says Frank Lampard

Everton manager Frank Lampard says Anthony Gordon will become a “huge” player for the Toffees and England throughout his career.

The 21-year-old winger has been a bright spark for Evertonians to cling onto during a miserable season which is still in real danger of ending with Premier League relegation.

Gordon has made 28 league appearances in a breakout season for the academy graduate and Lampard believes his prized asset will only get better and better.

“He is growing all the time and we saw that – going and playing against one of the best teams in the world, standing up and going past people and showing energy and quality and dedication,” he told evertontv (27 April).

“The next bit for Anthony is the end product of goals and assists – and he is desperate for it.

“It will come for him, he needs to stay cool with that – because every day he works on it, he does the right things.

“He is going to be a huge player for us and a huge player for his country.”

Sole Positive

You’d be hard-pressed to pick out any positives from this absolute disaster of a season but Gordon is providing the thinnest sliver of hope for Evertonians to cling onto.

If the worst was to happen and the Toffees drop into the Championship the youngster would surely tear up that division in a strong side and could help him to develop many of the final third attributes Lampard alluded to.

Of course, that is the absolute last thing anyone associated with Everton wants but in this crash-course campaign, it’s natural to try to grasp at anything that could suggest a turn in fortunes.

Everton

Gordon is one of the few faces likely to stick around should relegation happen given his local roots and presumably reasonable salary, and currently looks like one of the only players giving absolutely everything to ensure that doesn’t happen.

Everton will need that fighting spirit and more as they enter a defining final six games both for the season and the future of the football club as a whole.

In other Everton news, this talkSPORT pundit has warned Jordan Pickford his England future is at risk if he stays with the Toffees.
