Donny van de Beek to head for Everton exit regardless of latest Premier League relegation twist

It is very obviously good news for Everton that they won against Chelsea on Sunday – but it’s not as clear cut for loan flop Donny van de Beek.

Since joining the Toffees on loan from Manchester United in January, the 25-year-old Dutchman has struggled to impress and has been out recently with a thigh injury.

Van de Beek’s played just six times for the Blues, completing 90 minutes in just half of those Premier League outings.

He’s not played since 13 March and based on the form of Frank Lampard’s side, it’s hard to see him playing for the Goodison outfit again.

Van de Beek’s injury doesn’t mean he’ll miss the rest of the season but his poor performances and the improvements of those heroes who starred against Chelsea on Sunday should keep him out of the side no matter what.

And that’s a huge blow for van de Beek, who’s not enjoying his time in England after signing for Manchester United from Ajax in 2020.

In fact, van de Beek reportedly wants to join Everton permanently this summer with The Mirror reporting on 18 February that he has no intentions of going back to Man United and that he would want to stay on Merseyside.

But why would a club that’s hamstrung by Financial Fair Play spent £20million on a player who’s in bad form, has proven to be injury prone and hasn’t contributed anything in his time at Goodison? Also, that’s a fee that the Blues won’t be anywhere near considering if they’re relegated.

It’s a harsh truth – but Everton do not need van de Beek.

On Sunday, we saw a mammoth – and unexpected – performance by the Toffees to beat Chelsea 1-0 at Goodison Park that puts them within two points of safety with a game in hand on Leeds and Burnley.

Everton have favourable fixtures compared to Leeds especially, so it does look as though survival is very much on the cards and if relegation is avoided without van de Beek – the club doesn’t need him.

Hopefully there’s some light at the end of the tunnel for the Netherlands international as his former Ajax manager Erik ten Hag is set to take charge at Manchester United ahead of next season.

But it doesn’t look good for van de Beek, who no doubt feels as though he has no home in English football based on how badly his spells at Man United and Everton have gone.
