Everton receive ‘impressive’ applications for vacant academy staff positions

Everton have received a number of applications for their vacant academy positions in the staff department and Kevin Thelwell has emailed the current staff.

According to i news, a few of the applicants have been touted as “impressive candidates” as an academy director and an Under-23s coach are the main focus of this particular recruitment drive.

Thelwell, who is the director of football at Goodison Park, sent out an email to all of the club’s current staff to update them on the process with the deadline for applications ending on Friday (6 May).

“This search for both roles will be thorough and far-reaching,” the email reads. “Finding the very best candidate for each position is crucial, given the significance of those roles to our development pathway.

“Simply, we want to appoint the very best candidates possible for both roles.”

The extra push for recruiting in these roles comes after David Unsworth handed his notice in to step down as Under-23s manager earlier this season.

Not now

It’s great that the club are taking steps to look to the future but is now really the time to be doing exactly that?

Everton are in deep trouble of being relegated from the Premier League for the very first time and dropping out of the top division for the first time in several decades.

They can’t afford to plan for next season yet because they still don’t know their divisional fate and all of their attention should be focused on ensuring that they are still a Premier League side come August.

It isn’t an insurmountable deficit to overcome either with just two points separating Frank Lampard’s Toffees and Leeds United who currently occupy the last safe spot in 17th.

Everton also have the advantage of a game in hand so it is still in their hands and the last thing they should be doing is putting this much effort into hiring academy staff when that can quite easily wait until the end of the season.

In other Everton news, the board are reportedly ready to listen to offers for one of the club’s best performers this season.
