Sky Sports pundit expects Frank Lampard to get rid of Everton players he ‘can’t trust’ in the summer
We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…
Frank Lampard has had to make a Jose Mourinho-style tactical switch because he “can’t trust” his defence on the ball says Kevin Campbell.
Jamie Carragher’s Monday Night Football analysis on Sky Sports detailed a change in outlook from the Toffees boss that emulated his former Chelsea manager, and got a crucial result against the same side.
But Sky Sports pundit Campbell sees it as a matter of needs must with the players he has at his disposal and doesn’t expect it to remain after a summer of “wholesale changes” with the squad.

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News he said: “I just think Frank Lampard looked at the players he’s got and doesn’t want to put extra pressure on them, because against a Chelsea side who can shut you down, who can trap you, you’re playing into their hands.
“And in Richarlison you’ve got someone up top who’s a bit of an all-rounder. He can do it all. He can head it, he can back into defenders, he can hold it up, he can run channels.
“So I think they’re playing a little bit more to their strengths, as opposed to playing into Chelsea’s hands.
“I think in the summer, if Everton retain their Premier League status, I think there’s going to be wholesale changes off the bat because Frank Lampard wants to be able to play a certain way.
“He wants to be able to trust the centre-halves etc. and he can’t trust them at the moment because they’re not good enough on the ball.
“So I’m sure he will be looking to address that in the summer.”

Lampard fell into the trap of trying to play possession football upon arrival at the club, but after being burnt one too many times has shed all pretences and gone right back to basics.
If that’s what it takes to keep this group of players in the Premier League then nobody will be complaining.
But Mourinho has a legion of detractors over his style of football, and wherever the Toffees are playing next season there are going to be changes if they are to adopt a style that has proven beyond the current crop this year.
In other Everton news, Paul Merson has defended one “world-class” Toffee against unjust criticism.
