Everton must take control of relegation narrative after Burnley defeat

It has been a long, hard season for everyone involved at Everton this season but finally there is some light at the end of the tunnel if they dare to take advantage of it.

As we head into the final five games of the Premier League season for the Toffees, they sit in 18th place behind both Burnley and Leeds with two points less and two games played less.

As they travel to face Leicester at the King Power Stadium on Sunday [May 8] afternoon though, they have a real chance to create distance between themselves and their rivals.

On Saturday afternoon [May 7] the blues were handed a huge boost when Burnley’s tremendous run of form was halted by none other than Steve Gerrard’s Aston Villa side at Turf Moor.

It snapped a four game unbeaten run for Burnley, in which they picked up ten points from the last available 12 to move out of the drop zone and leapfrog Everton and Leeds.

Everton now know that they have two chances to drag themselves out of the hole their poor performances this season have put them in.

After Leicester they will travel just north of London to take on Watford at Vicarage Road, a side who have lost 11 home games in a row and are already relegated from the Premier League.

But first they must overcome a huge problem, with the team having failed to win on the road since a victory at Brighton back in August at the start of the season.

Burnley’s great form mixed with Everton’s extremely difficult run of fixtures meant that everyone had the Toffees basically ticked off as going down.

But they now know two wins could save their season. Two wins in a week is the perfect way to do it, and with that knowledge ahead of kick off they must do all they can to ensure it happens.

Lampard has known that their safety was in their hands with the game in hand, but they now have had that doubled. To take some words from an old friend, “this does not slip now”.
