Sky Sports pundit predicts Everton exit for Yerry Mina as Colombian suffers latest injury

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Everton manager Frank Lampard will have to move on from defender Yerry Mina because of extensive fitness issues predicts Kevin Campbell.

The Colombian has only made 13 Premier League appearances this season, and despite playing a key role in the defeat of Chelsea last week (1 May), had to go off with a thigh issue once again during the win over Leicester on Sunday (8 May).

Sky Sports pundit Campbell acknowledges what the 27-year-old brings to the side when he is fit, but believes that simply isn’t often enough and believes Lampard has made his mind up.

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News about the defender’s recent impact he said: “Yeah, made a big difference. He’s awkward, he’s tough, he’s big, and he’s dominant in the air isn’t he?

“I think there’s lots of shenanigans going on when he’s playing.

“The problem Everton have with him has always been keeping him fit. He breaks down.

“When he’s playing they are a better side than when he’s not, that’s for sure, they’re a better team with him than without him.

“But he needs to keep his fitness.

“I’ll be honest with you, I think Frank Lampard will probably look at what he’s got and say, ‘I want a total restructure’.

“Because having a centre-half like Yerry Mina who doesn’t play is no good. You need ever-presents. You need your defence in tact.

“I just think there’s going to be a serious restructure, I think whether they stay up or the worst was to happen, there’s going to be a restructure.”

Lampard said after the game at the King Power that he was “hopeful” the latest knock to the big centre-back was not serious, but it is becoming clear he cannot be relied upon week after week.

After returning from a long lay-off for the draw with Leicester at Goodison, he was again unable to feature in the Merseyside derby, before a key role against Chelsea gave way to an uneven performance in the return against the Foxes that only lasted 18 minutes.

He will have a year left on his contract in the summer, and if he is not able to provide enough of a return on the investment of a new contract by being sidelined so often, the club could be looking to recoup some fee while they still can.

In other Everton news, one former Toffee has warned fans of how emotional he got in a soon-to-air interview as recent scenes brought back memories of a previous great escape.
