View: Fabian Delph’s recent injury raises concerns about future with Everton

Veteran midfielder Fabian Delph’s career has taken another hit after he suffered an injury in the match against Watford on Wednesday evening.

The 32-year-old was substituted in the 81st minute of the goalless draw at Vicarage Road in this crucial relegation battle.

While the status of Delph’s injury remains unknown, manager Frank Lampard has stated after the match while talking to Everton TV that the central midfielder will be a ‘big miss’.

“I don’t know what the injury is so we’ll have to see,” he said. “He would be a big miss. Because you need your big players in these moments.”

Injury troubles

This is not the first time when Delph’s career at the Goodison Park is affected due to an injury. The former England international joined the Toffees in the summer of 2019 from league rivals Manchester City in a deal worth £8.55 million.

Since then, in the last three seasons, Delph has only managed to represent the Liverpool-based club in 41 matches across all competitions.

During that time frame, the Bradford-born midfielder has never played 20 or more matches for Everton in the Premier League. The most were 16 which included 13 starts and three appearances off the bench in the 2019-20 season.

Those absences have largely been down to calf and hamstring injuries and both took a long time to recover.

The latest setback will put a lot of question marks regarding the future of Delph at the club, especially since he is coming to the end of his three-year contract which is set to expire in the summer.
