Graeme Souness gushes over 'sensational' Everton in big relegation call

Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness has gushed over Everton, insisting that they are in a “good place” in the Premier League relegation battle.

The former Liverpool ace hailed the Blues’ sensational crowd for giving the players a lift in the 1-0 win against Chelsea at Goodison Park that saw Frank Lampard’s side bounce out of the drop zone.

With the Toffees now enjoying a two-point gap on Burnley and Leeds, Souness didn’t have such positive words to say about their fellow relegation rivals.

He told Sky Sports via Liverpool Echo: “I am thinking Everton are in a good place. They have a bit of momentum right now. We saw the Goodison Park crowd last week [during Everton’s 1-0 win over Chelsea]. They were sensational.

“I think Burnley might struggle to win any of those games. Newcastle are a very different team now. I think Leeds will have to win one of those games, as I see it. They have to win a game. Their goal difference is stinking.”

Breathing room.

Everton are in the best position they possibly can be – given how bad of a season it has been – going into their final three games.

A couple of weeks ago it looked as if Lampard’s side was nailed on to go down as they sat in the bottom three with a disastrous run of fixtures and a mountain to climb.

Fast forward to now and you can comfortably say that they will likely stay up – bar any last-minute catastrophes.

The players and staff deserve so much credit but the real praise needs to go to the fans.

Their unwavering support over the last few weeks has given the team the boost they were desperate for all season long.

It is amazing what can happen when a group of players is united with such a loyal fanbase.

Well done to Lampard for being the first manager in a long time to get everyone singing to the same tune but the real test will come at the start of next season when they – hopefully – no longer have their backs up against the wall.

In other Everton news, Martin Keown says that Everton must respond to a “tremendous body blow” in their “phenomenal” relegation war.
