talkSPORT pundit worried about Everton defence after major mix-ups risk Premier League survival

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Kevin Campbell insists Everton must iron out problems with their defence after multiple mix-ups have threatened recent points.

Defenders collided on various occasions in the 2-1 win at Leicester (8 May), including for the Foxes equaliser when Yerry Mina knocked Seamus Coleman to the floor and played the ball into Patson Daka’s path.

talkSPORT pundit Campbell blames the mess ups on the players rather than the manager, and believes Frank Lampard needs to sort the issue out as a priority as it hampers the Toffees chances to pick up key points in the battle against relegation.

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News he said while laughing: “It’s not lack of organisation I can you that much. But when two players are indecisive or they’re going for the same ball and mess up, and then Mina heads it straight through to Daka, there’s nothing a manager can do about it.

“It’s a mistake. Now you can say Coleman shouldn’t even have been there.

“But obviously Seamus is there. He’s trying to sort things out but your big centre-half is there so you’ve got to trust him.

“Unfortunately they give Leicester a goal, but they came up trumps [that day].

“These are the things that Frank Lampard’s going to have to address.

“Because it’s hard enough playing against opposition like a Leicester without giving them a free goal.

“It’s not right, so they’re going to have address these situations for sure.”

The Toffees got away with it at the King Power but they might not be so lucky again, and with margin for error wafer thin in the relegation battle it’s not a risk they can take.

Defensively Lampard has implemented a major improvement in recent weeks, but across the season it is has been a distinct weakness.

Mina is once again struggling with injury but Ben Godfrey is set to be in the mix again, so whoever plays needs to avoid the kind of confusion that also spread to Mason Holgate and Michael Keane at Leicester.

In other Everton news, a player who looked set to leave on a free transfer in the summer should sign a new contract as early as next week.
