Piers Morgan blasts Everton forward Salomon Rondon for ‘dumbest cameo’ against Brentford
Piers Morgan slammed Everton forward Salomon Rondon for being sent off soon after coming on in the 3-2 loss to Brentford on Sunday (15 May).
The Venezuela striker was shown a straight red by Michael Oliver for a two-footed lunge on Rico Henry in the 88th minute at Goodison Park, having only come on in the 84th.
He subsequently apologised on social media (via Liverpool Echo), saying he was “truly sorry” for the incident.
But TV host Morgan stuck the boot in, posting on his Twitter account: “You get brought on in the 84th minute, with your relegation-battling team already down to ten men, and you do this 3 minutes later & get sent off.
“Take a bow, Mr Rondon, this might be the dumbest cameo in world football history.”
The red card ended hopes of an unlikely late equaliser, having already lost Jarrad Branthwaite to his own sending off after just 18 minutes.
A bit rich
Rondon hardly aided proceedings for his team, and is strangely the third relegation threatened played to launch into a needless tackle like this in the last three rounds of fixtures.
Leeds players Luke Ayling and Dan James did very similar in their respective losses to Arsenal and Chelsea.
The Toffees man probably didn’t affect the final result, but it was far from beneficial on a rough day for the team.

The famously objectionable Morgan likes to criticise others but doesn’t react well when the roles are reversed, so it’s no surprise he had plenty to say here.
Thankfully Dominic Calvert-Lewin was fit enough to start the game, so the loss of Rondon for the final two fixtures, while clearly unhelpful, perhaps won’t be felt as strongly as if the England man was still missing.
It was a damaging result at Goodison, in terms of the result, the morale around the team, and the loss of two players to suspension.
But there is little time to dwell on it, with two crucial games left and the Toffees still just about in the ascendency in the relegation battle.
In other Everton news, Gary Neville couldn’t believe what Jamie Carragher said about the key controversy from the game.
