Robbie Savage slams Everton for poor season despite Premier League survival

Former Leicester City midfielder Robbie Savage has slammed Everton for their poor performance in the Premier League this season.

The Toffees secured their Premier League safety on Thursday night (19 May), coming from 2-0 down to beat Crystal Palace 3-2 in a dramatic fashion at Goodison Park.

However, the former Welsh international, in a column for the Mirror, wrote that the Merseyside club should never have been in that position with the amount of investment they had in the last few years.

“With that squad, they should never have been in danger of going down in the first place,” wrote Savage.

“Frank Lampard gets an A grade for holding his nerve, but as a club it remains a mystery how they can spend £550million to go backwards. The rot must stop here.”

Horrible season

Sitting in 16th spot in the Premier League table, Everton did not have any smooth sailing at all this season.

They struggled to find their form under former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez, who joined the club when Carlo Ancelotti moved to Real Madrid as a replacement for Zinedine Zidane.

Under his tenure at Goodison Park, the Toffees played 22 games across all competitions, winning just seven and suffering 11 defeats in the process.

His short time at the club came to an end earlier this year following a 2-1 defeat against Norwich, which left the club reeling in 15th place.

Under Chelsea legend Frank Lampard’s management, the Liverpool-based club have been on a roller-coaster ride.

But lately, they have managed to secure some crucial against Manchester United, Chelsea, Leicester City and Crystal Palace which was eventually enough to keep them in the Premier League for another season.

In other Everton news, Richard Keys reacted live to footage of Frank Lampard celebrating on the roof after the win and warned the club had avoided a “meltdown”.
