Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin top choice for Newcastle if Darwin Nunez move fails – report

Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin appears to be the top choice for Newcastle United in their back-up targets this summer, according to the Telegraph.

The newspaper have reported on their website that Benfica star Darwin Nunez is the main target, but he could face more attractive offers from Champions League clubs.

There is said to be uncertainty from St James’ Park on whether or not the Toffees would actually allow the England international to leave Goodison Park.

It has not been a memorable season for the striker, with injuries really holding back any progress.

Calvert-Lewin did get the last laugh though and scored the all-important goal that handed Everton three points against Crystal Palace and Premier League survival.

That goal was worth hundreds of millions to Farhad Moshiri and the club, and it was brilliant to see our main talisman be able to score that after his torrid year.

Frank Lampard will no doubt want to keep him around, but it is uncertain on whether or not some players will need to be moved on to ease the financial fair play rulings.

Keep.

A fully fit Calvert-Lewin is a completely different animal.

The England international can not be handled by any defender when at his peak, with his physicality and pace are something that not many others have together.

Richarlison is much more likely to leave than his fellow striker given the serious interest coming in for him, but one thing is for sure, we cannot lose both.

Lampard knows he will have to be smart in the summer window, likely raising big cash from selling and reinvesting, but he can’t go too far and lose the entire spine of the current side.

Calvert-Lewin will not want to move on, he has more to prove after missing so much of a difficult season and moving into the new stadium, he can be made the main man again.

This is a fresh start and a new era under Lampard for the first full season, and Calvert-Lewin more than anyone certainly needs that in his career ahead of the World Cup.
