Leeds United make new demand to Premier League over Everton finances as Tory MP speaks out

Leeds United and Burnley have demanded evidence from the Premier League to see whether Everton have broken any financial rules, according to The Times.

The newspaper reports that Leeds and relegated Burnley have also “asked specifically that Everton do not delete any data or documents relating to transfers, sponsorship, stadium and commercial deals”.

After the Blues secured Premier League survival, Leeds and Burnley threatened legal action against the Merseyside club and the Premier League if any financial rules had been broken.

Former sports minister and Conservative MP Tracey Crouch believes this issue has increased the need for an independent regulator in football.

Speaking in the Law in Sport Conference in London, as quoted by The Times, Crouch said: “If we did have an independent regulator then these matters might be decided a lot swifter.

“It does remove all of the conflicts of interest we currently see within the Premier League.”

Never a quiet day on Merseyside

While Everton’s Premier League safety has been confirmed after a truly terrible season, it seems as though there’s still plenty of drama in the making off the pitch.

It’s no secret that Farhad Moshiri has spent a lot of money in his time as the Toffees owner while the club’s movement in the last two transfer windows has also been impeded by Financial Fair Play rules.

You can understand why Leeds and Burnley have brought about this issue, especially as Burnley have ended up being the club who dropped out of the Premier League while Everton’s expensive squad just about kept its neck above the water.

However, Everton and the Premier League have been working hand in hand over the financial situation at Goodison Park.

Plus, as reported by the Daily Mail on 3 April, “the Premier League quietly relaxed its sustainability rules in September 2020”.

That might be something that hasn’t been taken into account by the experts and the accountants at both Leeds and Burnley.

We’ll have to wait and see though.
