Everton move to signBlackpool goalkeeper Chris Maxwell has stalled

Everton have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of a backup goalkeeper as their move for Blackpool captain Chris Maxwell stalls according to Lancs Live.

Lancs Live reported that the Blackpool shot-stopper was due to join Everton as a backup option after falling out of favour at Bloomfield Road this season.

However, Lancs Live reported on Thursday [26 May] that uncertainty over the goalkeeper situation at Everton has put the deal on hold.

As reported by the Liverpool Echo [13 May], the Toffees have taken up an option on Asmir Begovic’s contract.

That leaves Joao Virginia and Andy Lonergan as their other options in goal and it remains to be seen if they have futures at the club.

Maxwell a good option

Maxwell was named in the League One team of the season last year and is highly thought of amongst Blackpool fans.

At 31, he is still relatively young for a goalkeeper and would be a good option for Lampard to pursue.

Virginia would also be an interesting option to utilise at times this season with the keeper only 22-years-old.

However, 38-year-old Lonergan should be on his way out of Goodison Park.

With Everton looking to develop a new style of recruitment, having players in the latter stages of their career offering nothing to the club is not a good look.

Begovic is 34, so certainly still has his uses.

It will be interesting to see if Everton cash in on Jordan Pickford this summer.

The Irish Independent reported [12 May], that the Toffees were keen on signing 20-year-old Gavin Bazunu from Manchester City.

If that move did happen, Bazunu would be challenging for the number one jersey with Pickford.

It promises to be an interesting transfer window in the goalkeeper department at Goodison Park.
