Everton must go big this summer to compete with new five-sub rule

This summer transfer window was already going to be a very significant one for Everton after their torrid 2021-22 campaign just about ended in survival.

The Toffees secured their Premier League status with one game to spare and Frank Lampard should be more than aware that his squad needs a big overhaul if they are to compete higher up the division next season.

But that isn’t the only thing he will have to contend with because the Premier League will introduce a new rule from next season which will hugely benefit the clubs with a deep squad to pick from.

Much like during the COVID-affected 2020-21 season, each team will be permitted five substitutes per game, to be used on three different occasions throughout the 90 minutes rather than the traditional three that was used most recently [Liverpool Echo].

This means that you can’t get away with having a very good starting 11 and then a couple of impact players to bring off the bench anymore because teams will use all five and get the fresh legs on to run your tiring side ragged.

Lampard will be very aware of this and his mind will be ticking at a million miles per hour as he tries to plan what Everton will do in the transfer market.

There has to be some caution taken on some signings because he can’t afford to splash the majority of his budget on one player when he needs to sign so many.

But Farhad Moshiri needs to recognise the peril his club is in at the moment without proper investment so if Lampard says he needs plenty of cash to get his targets, then he’d better dig very deep into his pockets and provide that for him on demand.

In other Everton news, one of those Lampard could bring to Merseyside is this 21-year-old South American midfielder who is catching the eye on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean.
