Everton ace Nathan Patterson could be in contention for Scotland's huge Ukraine clash

Everton defender Nathan Patterson could feature in Scotland’s huge World Cup playoff against Ukraine on Wednesday [1 June], according to Steven Naismith.

Patterson moved to Goodison Park in January but is yet to feature for the Toffees after an injury-hit season for the 20-year-old.

However, after being called up to Steve Clarke’s Scotland squad, Naismith has suggested the right-back could now feature in their upcoming fixtures.

As quoted by the Scottish Daily Express on Sunday [29 May], Naismith said: “[Patterson] is obviously the one who came in whilst being injured but he has the next two days on the pitch to show that he is ready and fit.

“Nathan has shown that when he wasn’t playing for Rangers, he played for Scotland, he played very well.

“So from that side everyone is comfortable that he could be ready and be in contention.”

Boost for Lampard

This is a boost for Frank Lampard heading into his first summer as Everton manager.

Patterson is a versatile option that can cover right-back and the right-sided centre-half position.

With the Scotland international only being 20 he has plenty of years ahead of him to become an integral part of the Toffees’ plans going forward.

Furthermore, Lampard has previously been very keen to give youth a chance with Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori two good examples from his time at Derby County.

Using Patterson will also allow Lampard to focus on strengthening other areas of his squad.

The Everton boss needs to completely overhaul his squad which flirted dangerously close to relegation this season.

Starting to utilise youth and looking for value in the transfer market is what has to happen at Goodison Park.

For too long the Toffees have thrown money at underperforming and high-earning players on the decline.

This summer should be a fresh start at Goodison and using players such as Patterson should be a route the Toffees continue to follow in the future.
