Everton could regret David Unsworth exit as Blackburn Rovers lurk

David Unsworth left Everton earlier this year having been a key figure behind-the-scenes at Finch Farm in the Toffees’ academy for many years.

The 48-year-old, who played for the club in two stints as well as earning a single England cap during his playing days, has only ever been a caretaker manager at senior level winning three games in two spells at Goodison Park.

But he chose to leave Merseyside to pursue a managerial career and that could take him to Lancashire where Championship side Blackburn Rovers are keen [Alan Myers].

The Riversiders are searching for a new manager as Tony Mowbray, who had been in charge since 2017, opted to leave at the end of the 2021-22 season.

If they saw Unsworth’s record to date, they might not be so keen on making him their next boss but you can’t look past what he’s managed to do with the Everton academy for many years.

The way he coaches young players is highly admirable among managers and with Rovers having a number of highly-rated youngsters in their ranks already, he may just be the perfect man to take on the challenge.

That may also be why Everton could be very worried right now because they know how good a manager he is even if the few matches he’s taken the reins for haven’t gone so successfully.

If Unsworth gets it right from the off at Ewood Park, he could very well steer the club back into the Premier League very quickly, especially if Ben Brereton-Diaz sticks around, and soon they’ll be challenging the Toffees again, provided they stay up too.

The former Finch Fram man would probably love nothing more than to get one over on his old employer and he could easily do just that because he is a brilliant man-manager.

This could come back to bite us.
