Everton make formal contract offer to James Tarkowski
Everton have made a formal approach to Burnley defender James Tarkowski to try and bring him to Goodison Park, according to Ryan Taylor.
The 29-year-old is set to leave Turf Moor at the end of this month when his contract expires with the Clarets and Frank Lampard has moved quickly to beat a lot of Premier League interest to the punch.
Tarkowski was unable to keep Burnley in the Premier League as they fell to a final-day defeat at home to Newcastle and dropped into the relegation zone as Leeds United won away at Brentford to end their long spell in the top flight.
As a result, the defender, who has played twice for England, wants to leave to remain in the big league to keep his hopes of a World Cup spot alive and that has opened the door for the Toffees to swoop.
Everton have already stolen a march on the opposition with this formal bid made to the player and the club are hopeful that they can complete a deal.
Solid
The defence was a big problem for Everton last season and they are well aware that they simply must do something about it in the summer to stop a similarly precarious season from occurring.
This is the first big step towards becoming a much more established and solid team which would no longer have to rely on star attackers bailing them out time after time.

Lampard is also looking at making Tarkowski’s central defensive partner Ben Mee his next addition to the squad at Finch Farm [The Mirror] and the two together would be the best pairing he could possibly wish for.
Having played together at Turf Moor for the past six seasons, they know each other’s game inside out and that solid base has been the main reason why Burnley have managed to stay in the league for so long while they spent far less than anybody else in the transfer market and it’s something we need to harness now.
