Sky Sports pundit raves about top Everton target James Tarkowski but unsold on Nathan Ake

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Kevin Campbell is unsold on a potential Everton move for Manchester City’s Nathan Ake but is fully in support of the James Tarkowski pursuit.

The Mirror suggested that Frank Lampard could offer the former Chelsea and Bournemouth player a loan deal to get more first team football, as he is reportedly unhappy with his position at the Etihad.

But while Sky Sports pundit Campbell believes the Dutchman is a good player and offers versatility, he cannot look past the Toffees’ top defensive target, James Tarkowski, who he believes ticks all the boxes in terms of the kind of man you want in your back line.

Speaking to Goodison News he said: “Yeah Nathan Ake’s done okay. He’s played many games with Bournemouth etc.

“And now he’s at City he’s a Premier League winner. He’s another versatile player who can play centre half, full back, probably even holding midfielder at times.

“But I like the look of Tarkowski. I like someone who’s just going to be there, do their job. Nothing fancy, just be unassuming and do his job.

“Time’s run out, he’s out of contract at Burnley so he can go to Everton and Everton can sign a player on a free.

“Obviously his wages he’ll get an upgrade.

“But somebody like him I think will be golden because he’s hardly ever injured and he’s somebody you can rely on.

“He just does his job. He’s a proper defender.”

Everton

The Toffees have made the out-of-contract Burnley defender their primary target with Lampard looking to strengthen a defence that proved to be a major weakness as the club came dangerously close to relegation.

The are believed to be battling Aston Villa and West Ham for his signature, but reports suggest they are leading the race currently [Mirror].

If they can land a highly-sought after free transfer in light of the financial restrictions it would be a huge boost for the club, and the hope is that once some of their own expiring contracts come to an end the space on the wage bill can be put towards the 29-year-old Englishman.

In other Everton news, the club could be in line to net £25million this summer for a player they have no use for.
