Everton need to re-ignite interest in Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz
Everton do not a have a great record while signing midfielders in the recent past, with a number of signing falling to create an impact.
Back in January earlier this year, the Toffees were linked with a move to sign Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz, according to Sky Sports.
However, that late interest was not successful as Villa were reluctant to let the player leave while having very little time to find a replacement.
Luiz has been a Villa player since the summer of 2019 when he moved from Manchester City in a deal worth £15million [BBC Sport].
Worth a gamble
One of the reasons why Premier League pundits rate Aston Villa so highly is because of their midfield.
Despite losing Jack Grealish to Man City last season, they managed to create a brilliant unit in the middle of the park and Luiz was one of the main components who made things work for the side.
If Frank Lampard manages to get Luiz, he will be a massive part of their midfield structure.
Although his main position is defensive midfield, Luiz has the ability to play as a box-to-box midfielder.
Everton already have Abdoulaye Doucouré in their defensive midfield slot, but he has never been consistent in that role since moving to the Goodison Park. Therefore, the Brazil international’s addition can prove to be a good competition for him as well.
Luiz can also play in a pivot with the Mali international when Lampard goes for a defensive approach in certain games.

He could be the answer to the revolving door in the middle of the Toffees formation, with the Daily Mail reported on 30 March that he could be sold this summer and Steven Gerrard has subsequently signed Boubacar Kamara.
