Jonjoe Kenny closes in on new club after snubbing Everton deal
Everton defender Jonjoe Kenny is set to finalise a move to Hertha Berlin after turning down a new contract at Goodison Park according to Sky Sports.
The club revealed their retained list on 10 June and confirmed that the 25-year-old had been offered new terms to remain at Goodison Park. However, Kenny rejected the deal to pursue an opportunity elsewhere and will leave when his Blues contract expires on 30 June.
It has been reported by Sky Sports on Sunday 12 June, that the right-back is set to finalise a deal with Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin and he’s jetted out to Germany to do just that.
Kenny returns to Germany where he previously had a loan spell for Shalke 04 in 2019.
Good move all round
It was actually a surprise that Everton offered Kenny new terms considering he had only played 15 Premier League matches in the 2022/23 campaign.
In a summer where the Toffees need to be moving on their underperforming players, it makes sense for the academy graduate to pursue a new challenge in Germany where he has clearly felt at home before.
It was almost a certainty that Nathan Patterson will be in Frank Lampard’s plans for the new season and there was every chance the highly rated Scotland youngster would be ahead of Kenny in the pecking order.
Kenny clearly wants to be playing football at a crucial time in his career and couldn’t risk being sat on the bench at Goodison as a backup.
It is clear the Toffees wanted to keep Kenny as a backup in case of any injuries or poor form that occurred.
Kenny’s departure free’s up space in Lampard’s wage budget to potentially use elsewhere.
With uncertainty over both Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison, Lampard would be wise to keep his options open as he heads into what is going to be a hectic summer at Goodison Park.
In other Everton news, the Blues could be forced into a big sale as Usmanov’s name is mentioned in a transfer report.
