Sky Sports pundit knows reason why recent Everton and Liverpool incidents only saw FA charge one

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

The “simple” explanation for why Everton and Liverpool have been treated differently over recent similar incidents is success, according to Kevin Campbell.

Toffees boss Frank Lampard was fined on 31 May for his comments about referee Stuart Attwell after the Merseyside derby on 24 April, and Brazilian forward Richarlison received an FA charge a day later for throwing a blue smoke canister during the defeat of Chelsea on 1 May.

Sky Sports’ Ben Grounds subsequently noted on his Twitter account that in both cases the governing body’s reaction was harsher than it was for similar incidents involving Anfield manager Jurgen Klopp, and his young midfielder Harvey Elliott, leaving Sky Sports pundit Campbell in no doubt about the reason for the difference.

“Why?” he scoffed when speaking exclusively to Goodison News.

Because one team’s challenging at the top and winning things, and Everton have been languishing.

“Whatever people say, you do earn your position, and Liverpool have got that position as one of the top teams.

“And Everton haven’t been there for a while, and that’s why they’ve been treated differently.

“It’s as simple as that.”

Ex-Everton captain Campbell’s response plays into the age-old view that the big sides get the benefit of the doubt compared to smaller teams.

The Toffees are by no means a small team, but their lowly status during the 2021/22 season made them an easy target.

Lampard’s fine came for suggesting as much in during the clash between the two Merseyside rivals, as he said the home side would have been given a penalty at Anfield for the same incident that saw Anthony Gordon denied, and given the wider context it isn’t hard to see why he felt that way.

In other Everton news, talkSPORT’s Simon Jordan made a sly dig at a Toffees star after Danny Murphy had talked him up for a move to be a reserve option.
