Everton: Danny Mills clashes with Simon Jordan live on talkSPORT over Jordan Pickford and Aaron Ramsdale

Danny Mills and Simon Jordan clashed over Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and Aaron Ramsdale’s performance in goal for England on Tuesday night (14 June).

England were thrashed 4-0 by Hungary at Molineux in the Three Lions’ biggest home defeat in almost 100 years.

Arsenal number one Ramsdale endured a nightmare performance, leading to Mills claiming that there have been widespread calls for the Gunners man to replace Pickford in goals for England.

Jordan, however, refutes that claim, suggesting that fans have only wanted Ramsdale to be in the squad with Pickford.

“There was a massive call for Aaron Ramsdale to be England’s number one. All of those people have suddenly disappeared,” said Mills on talkSPORT on Wednesday (15 June), as shown on the radio station’s Twitter account.

Jim White then asked: “If Pickford played, would it have been 4-0?”

Mills said: “If Pickford had let that first goal in, he would have been slaughtered this morning. Everyone would have said, ‘oh, a top goalkeeper saves that, he got a hand on it and should’ve saved it’.

“[I’m] not hearing that about Aaron Ramsdale.”

Jordan then interrupted, saying: “Oh, I don’t know about that. I think peoples’ reaction to Ramsdale is that he could have done a lot better and I think…”

Mills then barged in on the former Crystal Palace owner, saying: “Well he could have done.”

Jordan continued: “I don’t think people were shouting, ‘Aaron Ramsdale in’. I think they’ve been shouting for him to be in the conversation.”

Mills argued back saying: “Well a lot of people have been saying, ‘Pickford out’.”

Where’s he heard this?

Pickford has been outstanding for England.

Yes, he’s had some shockers for Everton over the years and there have been moments with his country where he’s been a little bit sketchy.

However, on the whole, Pickford has shown himself to be England’s best goalkeeper since David Seaman and he’s also on course to being in the same conversation with Gordon Banks when it comes to the Three Lions’ greatest all-time number ones.

Sure, he’ll never beat Banks unless he wins a World Cup or some other kind of major silverware. Banks’ save against Pele at the 1970 World Cup will also be something that is brought up.

It may be hard for Pickford to be seen as England’s best since Banks – but he’s got to be up there?

Pickford helped England win their first-ever World Cup penalty shoot-out and he was also tremendous in the Euro 2020 final shoot-out against Italy with the outfielders and Gareth Southgate’s selection letting the nation down.

He regularly plays above and beyond expectations and we’ve seen for Everton this year that he’s capable of doing it at a club level now too.

Pickford should be England’s number one for a very long time and Ramsdale is nowhere near to taking that away from the Blues star.

In other Everton news, a Sky Sports journalist has said the Blues should complete their first signing by the end of this week.
