Gareth Prosser favourite to be new Everton academy director after hundreds of applicants
Gareth Prosser is in pole position to be the new Everton academy director after the club had hundreds of applicants for the role as revealed by The Athletic.
Prosser has worked alongside sporting director Kevin Thelwell previously at Wolverhampton Wanderers and, at one stage, Wolves’ academy was ranked the third-best in the country.
The Athletic reported on Thursday 16 June that Prosser is now the favourite for the role following the conclusion of the interview process.

Thelwell is keen to appoint a new Under-23 head coach as well with previous incumbent David Unsworth taking on both the under-23 and academy roles simultaneously.
Thelwell revolution
It is pleasing to see Thelwell get his Goodison Park restructure underway and focussing on the academy and development teams first is exactly what needed to be done.
It should be an exciting prospect for Everton fans to hear of Prosser and Thelwell’s previous good work at Wolves and the potential they could unlock in the Toffees’ youth systems.
It will be intriguing to see how Thelwell begins to influence first-team proceedings to ensure Everton’s nightmare 2021/22 Premier League campaign is not repeated.

By focussing on younger players it could give Everton a sustainable way of running the club to ensure that there is a constant stream of younger players coming through into the first team.
The decision to employ split the under-23s and academy director into two roles is also a smart move.
It will allow for there to be a more condensed focus on each section of the club and will ultimately mean more time and effort will go into each section.
