Sky Sports pundit explains reason for Jonjoe Kenny to turn down contract and leave Everton
We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…
Jonjoe Kenny has made the right decision for himself to leave Everton because he wasn’t going to be a starter says Kevin Campbell.
The 25-year-old local defender had been offered a new deal to remain at the club but turned it down before signing for Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin, having previously spent time on loan in Germany with Schalke.
Kenny had only made three Premier League appearances in the 2021/22 season before Frank Lampard arrived as manager, after which he was used in various positions to the tune of 12 league outings, but Sky Sports pundit Campbell feels despite the Toffees boss liking him the player has done what is best for his own career.
Speaking exclusively to Goodison News he said: “I think the time has come for Jonjoe Kenny to go and play somewhere [else].
“Fair enough, I think Frank Lampard likes him, but I think it boils down to – will he be your number one?
“And I don’t think Jonjoe Kenny would be the number one, if I’m honest.
“So I think Jonjoe Kenny’s done what’s right for him and gone somewhere where he’s probably going to be starting.
“He’s used to the German league. He had a good loan there.
“So he’s gone over there, and good luck to him.”
Lampard clearly valued the versatility that Kenny offered, hence the surprise offer of a multi-year contract, but he has never been a first choice option.
In seven senior seasons since coming through the Toffees academy he went on loan four times and made a total of 69 appearances for the club.
It may leave a hole in the boss’ plans that needs filling, but even if a market upgrade isn’t easily available it was probably time for him to move on given his age, and it may open up a spot in the squad for another academy product to step up.
