Andre Gomes' departure should not be enough for Everton to bring in Harry Winks
Andre Gomes is set to put an end to his disastrous tenure at Everton this summer, according to Football Insider.
The Portugal international’s future has been uncertain as the Toffees are looking to overhaul their squad after a horrible campaign where they narrowly avoided relegation.
As per the latest report, Gomes is ready to leave the club with Everton looking to make a move for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks.
Gomes has been with the Toffees since the summer of 2019 permanently when he moved from Barcelona in a deal worth £22.5 million.
The big question mark surrounding Winks is his ability to play in the first-team consistently. In the recently concluded Premier League season, the England international had 19 appearances. However, he found himself in the starting line-up in only 24% of those games [Transfermarkt].
Moreover, Mauricio Pochettino and Jose Mourinho previously also haven’t fancied the 26-year-old that much previously during their Tottenham stint. Therefore, it remains to be seen how Winks develops himself after joining Everton.
Even though he prefers playing as a central midfielder, Winks can play as a defensive midfielder and a pivot player. Therefore, we can expect to see him combine in midfield with the likes of Abdoulaye Doucouré.
However, Gomes leaving to make room for Winks will not be enough as there is also the likes of Allan present in the squad who can play a similar role.
Therefore, Everton must ensure that they move enough bodies before spending the kind of money they would need to sign Spurs midfielder, at a time when they have to strengthen other areas as well.
