Everton pull out of race for Chelsea defender Levi Colwill

Everton have pulled out of the race for Chelsea defender Levi Colwill this summer and will instead focus on other targets, according to The Mirror.

The Toffees had been expected to be interested in a move for 19-year-old Colwill, who had a very successful loan spell at Huddersfield last season as they reached the Championship play-off final.

But according to a report by The Mirror on June 28th, Lampard has opted to move for other targets like Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher and the club won’t try to sign the centre-back during the summer transfer window.

Brighton, Crystal Palace, Leicester and Southampton are the four teams that are most interested in a deal for the player, who will look to leave Chelsea in order for more regular first-team football.

Thomas Tuchel is said to want to take a look at him during pre-season, but with the club expected to sign at least one centre-back he could find himself on the fringes and will push for an exit should that happen.

Priorities

With James Tarkowski all but signed for the defence, the club need to prioritise strengthening other areas of the team first before making luxury signings.

Colwill is a terrific young talent but with Mason Holgate, Ben Godfrey and Jarrad Branthwaite all part of the first-team squad already there’s no need for another young defender to come in.

Gallagher would be a brilliant signing to boost the midfield area of the squad, which is in desperate need of bolstering and greater quality, while the club must search for an adequate replacement for the imminent departure of Richarlison.

It shows there is seemingly a plan in place to get the squad into better shape than it was during the 2021/22 season, while they aren’t willing to battle on over a deal they don’t need to complete.

Someone else may get a top player now, but it’s better that way than Everton winning a pointless battle with other clubs when they need to focus on other things.
