Joe Strange: Quite incredible financial mess Everton find themselves in
Everton selling Richarlison to Tottenham is a “sad state of affairs” with the club’s financial situation brandished “quite incredible” by the Daily Mail’s sports editor Joe Strange.
The Guardian’s Fabrizio Romano reported on Thursday 30 June that the Brazilian’s move to Tottenham is all but completed, for a fee of £50million plus add-ons.
This news has not been welcomed by The Mail’s Strange.
He wrote via his personal Twitter Account [30 June]: “Sad state of affairs when Everton are having to sell their best player and talisman, a regular for Brazil with two years left on his contract, to Tottenham for potentially £25m less than he’s worth.
“Quite incredible the financial mess the club is in.”
He’s not wrong
Strange isn’t wrong in his assessment of Everton’s situation at present.
The Toffees should never be in a predicament whereby they need to sell their best player for below his value in order to ensure that they are financially stable and able to invest in the squad.
How they have been allowed to stumble into this scenario is remarkable.

It is concerning to contemplate the amount of work that needs to go on behind the scenes at Everton in order for the Toffees to avoid relegation next season.
Hopefully, the incoming fee for Richarlison will allow Frank Lampard to finally become more active in the transfer market, with the Everton boss anxiously waiting for funds to become available to him.
The worry is that Everton haven’t got good recent history when it comes to recruiting players.
There is a lot of trust placed on the judgement of Kevin Thelwell and Lampard targeting the right players to take the Toffees in the right direction.
At present, there is every right for Evertonians to be concerned.
