Kevin Campbell: Harry Winks is the type of player Everton need

Former Everton striker Kevin Campbell believes Harry Winks would be a good fit at Goodison Park should he make the switch from Tottenham.

Sky Sports reported on 23 June that Everton are interested in the 26-year-old English midfielder.

Campbell believes a move for the Tottenham man is good business by the Toffees.

Talking on talkSPORT on Wednesday 29 June, Campbell said: “Harry Winks is a player who won’t get people off their seats but he will be a six or seven out of ten every week.

“Every club has them, they come in and do the job and when they’re not there you actually miss them.”

He added: “You need that lynchpin in the midfield.

“Allan is a good player but maybe they’re looking for someone a little bit more athletic.”

Athletic?

Not sure Winks is the most Athletic midfielder in the Premier League but it is easy to see where Campbell is coming from when talking about the 26-year-old Tottenham man.

He makes the centre-midfield role very easy on the eye and can be a good option for a side that wants to dominate the football.

However, it is crucial that Everton don’t overpay for his services.

There are plenty of players who can adopt a very similar role to Winks, with the 26-year-old very comfortable shifting the ball side to side with easy passes.

Clubs pay big money for players who will break the lines and look to make things happen, not merely to keep things ticking over in midfield.

Winks may well be an important cog in the Everton system under Frank Lampard but if the Tottenham man is viewed as one of the Toffees big-money signings then it will be slightly concerning.

Lampard must invest his transfer kitty wisely this summer.
