Mathew Mallon signs first Everton deal despite reports of leaving club
Everton have confirmed that young full-back Mathew Mallon has signed his first-ever professional deal at the club.
The club made an official announcement via their website that the 18-year-old has penned a two-year extension that will keep him at Goodison Park until 2024.
However, in April 2022, the Liverpool Echo reported that the right-back had left the Toffees and was set to join Blackburn Rovers in July.

Speaking about him nearly leaving, he said, “It’s a massive boost to get everything signed. It means so much for me and my family. To know it’s done and that I’m secure for the next two years is a great feeling.
“During last season, it looked like I was going to leave but the club wanted to keep me and it’s every boy’s dream to play for a club like Everton, so I’m pleased to get it sorted.
Change of heart?
Malon was one of the most exciting talents in the academy and was admired by David Unsworth as well.
Many expected his signing a permanent deal once his scholarship ended to be a formality but that certainly was not the case.
He looked set for a move to Ewood Park, perhaps under promises of being guaranteed first-team football which is why reports surfaced of his exit.
However, there was nothing official from the club at the time and he now looks to have changed his mind, realising Everton is best for his future prospects.
He’s captained the Under-18s side and has already made a few appearances for the Under-23s – something we’re expecting to see more of in the next season.
Hopefully, he’s got his head clear and is committed to the cause at Goodison Park as the club must not keep players at the club who would rather play their football elsewhere.
