Everton ready to pay £35m for Steven Bergwijn but he wants Ajax move

Tottenham Hotspur winger Steven Bergwijn wants to join Ajax despite the interest shown by both Everton and Manchester United, according to De Telegraaf reporter Mike Verweij.

The Toffees have been in the market to sign an attacking player in the ongoing transfer window, especially after the departure of Richarlison to Spurs.

On the other hand, rumours around Bergwijn’s future with the North London-based club intensified with the arrival of the Brazil international as well as Dejan Kulusevski in January.

Verweij stated that Everton and Manchester United were happy to meet the valuation of the Dutch international of £35million but the player wants to return to his native land.

Bitter pill to swallow

When Bergwijn scored on his Spurs debut against Manchester City, many would have felt that he would create a fantastic combination with the likes of Harry Kane and Son Heung Min, but that has never been the case.

With wingers coming in, the chances of him being part of the first team has decreased with Antonio Conte having options in abundance.

During his time with Spurs, Bergwijn had hardly any fitness or attitude issues which earned him praise from Conte as well from Jose Mourinho. But his inconsistent performances were never good enough for him to secure a spot in the playing XI.

At the age of 24, he would’ve been a great buy for Everton, considering he had ample amount of experience in the Premier League and had room to improve further.

But since Bergwijn is keener for a move elsewhere, it is time manager Frank Lampard must look elsewhere to find an apt replacement for Richarlison.

This could be a blessing in disguise eventually though, with £35million way too much of a commitment for the Toffees given our dreadful finances.
