Everton star Anthony Gordon subject to £35million approach from Newcastle

Newcastle have made contact with Everton about signing Anthony Gordon for £35million, according to Telegraph reporter Mike McGrath.

The 21-year-old was a target for Tottenham, who wanted to include him in a package deal for Richarlison, but the Toffees refused.

Now the Magpies, now bankrolled by Saudi billions, are set to test their resolve with a significant offer, with the ball now Everton’s court.

McGrath wrote on Twitter Wednesday (6 July) afternoon: “Newcastle have been in contact with Everton over £35m deal for Anthony Gordon.

“Will be down to EFC if they want to do business for the England Under-21 forward”.

Gordon emerged as one of the stars of a dismal season during 2021/22 and the club proved to be unwilling to let go of him throughout the negotiations with Spurs.

No way

It doesn’t look like the dismissal of that interest has put an end to the approaches this summer, and with finances known to be tight at Goodison teams with money see an opportunity.

But the Everton regime cannot countenance this one unless there is a crazy amount put on the table, as the youngster is already developing into a local hero and a star player in his own right.

Selling one big name star is one thing, and plenty of fans were unhappy enough about that, but Farhad Moshiri and Bill Kenwright have to know the mood will turn if they allow a key part of the future leave in the same window.

Everton

While they were pushed to sell Richarlison before the end of June because of the need to bring in money for the balance books, that deadline has now passed which should give the club breathing room.

Frank Lampard is already trying to fill the gap in his attacking output left by the main man up front from the relegation battle, and wants to add more with his chase for Morgan Gibbs-White from Wolves.

To give him the chance to lift this squad back up the table in the new season Gordon needs to be kept hold of as he looks set to be one of the key players for years to come.
