Dominic Calvert-Lewin owes Everton one more year after injury-hit 2021/22 season

Everton are in a position right now where their outgoing transfers are probably more important than the potential incomings for the new season.

After the sale of Richarlison to Tottenham for £60m, fans were hopeful that would be the last of the high profile departures and that the club could instead focus on strengthening the squad for the new season.

After narrowly avoiding relegation in the 2021/22 season, Frank Lampard needs funds to strengthen the team but it seems as though other clubs aren’t going to give him an easy ride.

So far the Toffees have only brought in James Tarkowski from Burnley on a free transfer, further proving just how short the club are when it comes to money for new signings.

There has been further interest in star attackers Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Anthony Gordon too from Premier League rivals Newcastle, and it’s been suggested that the club could be forced to sell again.

But while Gordon is happy to stay at the club as they prepare to offer him a new contract, Calvert-Lewin is said to be open to leaving for a new challenge.

Everton are “desperate” for him to stay, and the 25-year-old showed his value to the squad when he scored the winning goal against Crystal Palace last season to ensure their survival in the Premier League.

But that was just the fifth goal of the season for the England international, who missed large chunks of the campaign through injury and was unable to contribute for much of the season.

Because of that, and the position the club are in right now, maybe the striker should consider doing the right thing for Everton and the fans and sticking around for one more season at the very least.

Lampard stood by Calvert-Lewin when he was struggling for injury and form, going on a 12-game streak across a nine month period without a goal. He was rewarded, but now it’s time for Calvert-Lewin to really pay him back.

The club simply won’t be able to replace him in this window should he leave. Signing a striker is difficult enough when you don’t have financial trouble, but with how Everton must approach this window it would be nigh on impossible.

One more year allows the club to plan for his departure properly and prepare the funds to get a deal done. They’re struggling to replace Richarlison as it is, having to replace them both in one window would be simply catastrophic.
