Everton want Tottenham defender Japhet Tanganga on loan amid heavy competition

Everton had made a request to take Tottenham defender Japhet Tanganga on loan this summer, according to Gianluigi Longari.

The 23-year-old defender is in high demand with competition from within the Premier League and Serie A, and the Italian option is apparently an intriguing prospect for him.

After the sale of Richarlison to north London there have been repeated links on other players, with Frank Lampard believed to be interested in Harry Winks and Steven Bergwijn before the latter’s move to Ajax.

Spurs are still thought to want young star Anthony Gordon to go the other way as well, and now the latest name of Tanganga has been added.

Sport Italia journalist Longari reported on Twitter that AC Milan and Napoli are both following closely while Southampton have also made an approach for a loan deal.

The Toffees are in the market for another defender after the exit of Jonjoe Kenny, who turned down a new deal to move to Hertha Berlin.

The young Englishman is on the periphery of the squad in the capital but has made 43 senior appearances since breaking into the first team three seasons ago.

It would be a surprise if the rest of the summer window passed without there being any further business between Everton and Spurs.

This one seems like a sensible one for Lampard to pursue but with such a heated chase for the player it might not be one where the club are willing to put the best offer on the table.

Nathan Patterson has been heavily tipped to become a key performer in the new season by former Blue Pat Nevin, so the starting position on the right hand side should be locked down.

And with club captain Seamus Coleman still around it is not like there is a glaring hole, but the manager valued Kenny’s versatility and Tanganga is capable of playing at full-back and centrally.

James Tarkowski is the headline arrival in the middle, but should Yerry Mina move on there would be a need for more help there.
