Sky Sports pundit sees Everton win-win vs Newcastle in £60m Dominic Calvert-Lewin stand-off

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

The situation regarding Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s future “all favours Everton” whether he stays or goes, according to Kevin Campbell.

The Mirror reported on 3 July that the Toffees had quoted Newcastle £60million for their English striker and the Saudi-backed Magpies had not been put off by the price, although Frank Lampard is currently expecting the forward to stay.

After a difficult season on a personal level for the former Sheffield United man he may be ready to follow former strike partner Richarlison out of the club, and Sky Sports pundit Campbell believes that he hasn’t lost any of his value despite the down year so either staying or going would work for Everton.

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News the former Toffees captain said: “The injury-hit season last season obviously can diminish the price, but the problem is there isn’t a lot of players around like him.

“Now if you’re Everton, of course you want the top dollar for him.

“If it’s £60million at the start of last season, it’s £60million today.

“Because if Dominic Calvert-Lewin had a great season you’d be putting 10, 15, 20 million on top.

“So as far as Everton are concerned, yeah he’s had some injuries and stuff but he’s still worth £60million.

“Now if you want to pay it, fair enough, pay it.

“But if you don’t we’re more than happy to keep him.

“And that’s the problem a Newcastle, or somebody who wants that type of player has. If you don’t stump the money up, you aren’t getting the player.

“Simple.

“So it all favours Everton at the moment.”

At the start of the transfer window there was a combination of relief that the club had stayed in the Premier League, confirmed by Calvert-Lewin’s diving header to clinch victory over Crystal Palace, and fear as to who they might lose.

It was a blow to see Brazilian star Richarlison go to Spurs for £60million after the heroics he had produced down the stretch in the relegation battle, and the priority would still be to keep his English counterpart in the hopes of a return to his form of a year ago.

But if there is more big money on the table Campbell is realistic enough to see that there are benefits to taking the deal, especially as Frank Lampard has now started to get moving in the transfer market and is making a run at the likes of Armando Broja to overhaul a tired squad.
