Sky Sports pundit happy with £60million Everton sale of Richarlison amid fan criticism

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

The £60million price that Everton got for Richarlison was “about right” according to Kevin Campbell amid criticism from some fans.

The Brazilian star’s move to Tottenham ended up being pushed through just in time to get inside the 30 June deadline required to satisfy the accounts but plenty were unhappy at what was seen as a rushed deal at below market value.

Some Toffees fans online, including 90min writer Chris Smith, compared the sale to those of Wayne Rooney, Francis Jeffers, Duncan Ferguson and others over the years as Bill Kenwright’s period at the club was again brought into question, but Sky Sports pundit Campbell feels that in the circumstances the move works for everyone.

“I think £60million is about right if I’m honest with you. I do, I think that’s about right,” he said, speaking exclusively to Goodison News.

“We could talk £75million and all that but that’s not realistic as far as I’m concerned.

“Everton bought him. They made a handsome profit. He played and he put the team on his back last season.

“He hasn’t whinged, he’s been a stalwart at Everton.

“And I think reluctantly Blues would wish him well in his next club, obviously Spurs.

“But I think the fee’s about right.”

The profit was ultimately quite handy although it could have perhaps been bigger, but the situation is what it is, and with The Pigeon wanting to go there was only so far the club could hold out.

It can’t be denied that were they not in such under such tight financial constraints that negotiations would have been easier though.

The deal was criticised from the Spurs perspective as well with Paul Merson slamming it in his Daily Star column as a big move for the wrong target who won’t play ahead of what they’ve already got.

So it appears it isn’t a universally popular transfer on either side, but it is done now and Toffees fans will just hope that Frank Lampard can fill the hole left behind.
