Morgan Gibbs-White would be perfect statement signing for Everton this summer

This summer at Everton has been long and hard so far, with exits at the forefront of the majority of conversations and news articles.

But after excellent news that Anthony Gordon had been given the iconic number 10 shirt for the new season, all but ending speculation that he could leave the club, it was also shared that the Toffees are finally making moves on incoming signings.

A bid of £20m, rising to £25m for Wolves midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White was made and rejected by the Midlands club, but it shows that the club have finally settled on top targets.

According to The Telegraph, the 22-year-old attacking midfielder has been identified as a “priority” signing while iPaper claim that the club will return with a second bid at a later date.

That’s all positive news, but now the club’s owners and board must show the fans they mean business and get this deal over the line.

It’s the perfect type of signing that the club should be making at this stage of their process. They need a rebuild that involves young, hungry talented players rather than older players on massive wages.

We’ve already seen that profile doesn’t work well, with the likes of James Rodriguez lasting barely a year before moving away and leaving Everton in a hole.

But previous moves for young talent such as Richarlison from Watford have worked out well for the club. It’s a strategy that the club must return to in order to pull away from relegation battles and get back to fighting at the top end of the table where they belong.

The suggestion is that Wolves would take £30m for Gibbs-White, who shone out on loan with Sheffield United last season and is now attracting interest from several Premier League clubs. Barnsley boss Poya Asbaghi even went as far as to suggest he was the most “outstanding” of the lot in the Blades squad.

He will bring creativity and goals that have been lost to Tottenham in the £60m Richarlison deal, but he will also bring a steely determination and a hunger to prove to everyone watching that he is worthy of a Premier League place.

It’s a far cry from the mega name signings on huge wages, but it’s the right direction to go in. Now the club must deliver.

Lampard wants him and he would be the centrepiece of the new look Everton team, so there are no spaces for excuses. Get it done an give Lampard the tools to build something special here.
