Everton want to sign £10m-rated Middlesbrough ace Marcus Tavernier

Everton are in the hunt to sign Middlesbrough’s expansive winger Marcus Tavernier this summer, according to Football League World.

The 23-year-old is the brother of Rangers captain James Tavernier and enjoyed his best season yet at the Riverside during 2021-22 with five goals and five assists to his name while occasionally playing as a wing-back once Chris Wilder took charge.

Boro are hoping to hold out for at least £10million for a player that Neil Warnock described as “a special player. He’s a manager’s nightmare and a manager’s dream all wrapped up into one.” [Teesside Live].

Everton are not alone in wanting to sign the Leeds-born winger though with fellow Premier League sides Leicester City, Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest all keeping a watchful eye on his situation.

Middlesbrough are therefore resigned to the fact that the academy product is set to leave before the end of the transfer window but are determined to get as big a transfer fee as possible for him.

Direct

The one thing defenders at any level hate to play against is a quick and direct winger who will back themselves to win any foot race inside or out.

That is exactly what Tavernier tries to do when he is on the ball and perhaps that comes from hour after hour of practice in the back garden with brother James as kids.

With Anthony Gordon almost nailed on to start on the right-hand side, Tavernier’s addition would surely see our front three completed for next season with him occupying the left flank and Dominic Calvert-Lewin the main man through the middle.

Frank Lampard knows the Championship well having managed Derby County at the start of his managerial career and having come close to being a second-tier manager again last season, he clearly has no interest in getting anywhere near it this time around.

There’s no question that this move would be the one that sees Richarlison replaced and for a fraction of the cost but whether he can come up with the goods is yet to be seen.
