Everton ‘in talks’ with Burnley over signing of Maxwel Cornet – Sky Sports

Everton are “in talks” with Burnley over the signing of Ivory Coast winger Maxwel Cornet, according to a report by Sky Sports.

The 25-year-old scored nine Premier League goals and registered one assist in the Premier League during his maiden campaign in England, but couldn’t stop the Clarets being relegated to the Championship.

His contract contains a £17.5m release clause following that tumble down a division, and Frank Lampard is keen to bring him to Goodison Park with the club willing to pay the fee according to journalist Fraser Fletcher.

Sky Sports are reporting that the two clubs are in ongoing talks over a deal, with the player missing a pre-season fixture with a minor knock on Friday July 15th.

Moving parts

Cornet showed in his first season in the Premier League that he is more than good enough to be a main man for a club in the bottom half of the table.

But he’s proven his quality at a super high level in the past too, scoring three times during Lyon’s Champions League campaign against Manchester City back in 2018.

Those performances led to Pep Guardiola being “very impressed”, as quoted by RMC Sport, and the then-left back eventually moved further up the pitch to become a winger and even a striker at times.

With Richarlison leaving the club in a £60m deal earlier this summer, Everton need to replace his goals, assists and influence in attack and at £17.5m he would prove to be an absolute bargain buy.

A deal seems to be moving somewhat towards a conclusion, even if at a snail’s pace, but fans can be pleased to see and hear that the club are working behind the scenes to strengthen the team.
