Everton willing to pay £17.5m release clause to sign Maxwel Cornet

Everton are in pole position to complete the signing of Maxwel Cornet from Burnley this summer and are willing to pay his £17.5m release clause, according to Fraser Fletcher.

The Ivorian winger had an excellent season with the Clarets in 2021/22, scoring nine goals in 26 appearances during an injury hit campaign which saw them get relegated.

But his form has attracted interest from several clubs including Chelsea and Everton, but it’s the Toffees who lead the race for his signature according to former BBC journalist Fletcher.

Writing on his personal Twitter account, Fletcher said; “As I said Everton were chasing Maxwell Cornet and now in pole position for the Burnley player. My understanding is Everton are willing to pay the 17.5 release price.”

Replacement?

Everton need attacking reinforcements this summer after the £60m departure of Richarlison to Tottenham, and Cornet could provide just that for a rather budget fee.

The club would be making a considerable profit if they proceeded with this deal, while the 25-year-old is young enough to make an impact for several seasons and already proved he is capable of performing to a high level in the Premier League.

With that said though, his injury record is a bit of a concern as many of them seem to be muscle injuries and the fitness department at Finch Farm is clearly not the best.

But if the club are indeed sure they can get that under control, then they will be getting a “fantastic” player as described by Roy Keane live on Sky Sports last season and a perfect foil for Anthony Gordon who now looks set to stay.

He would bring pace, goals, assists and quality to a squad that is seriously lacking in attack right now, while also saving the club a lot of money too. Everyone wins.
